How My Passion for Sustainability Was Ignited

In May 2013, I presented research on plastic pollution to the Mississauga Environmental Advisory Committee. The urgency of my message resonated so strongly that the Mayor forwarded my work to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Premier of Ontario, and other key Ministers. This contribution informed municipal waste management discussions and ultimately led to Mississauga updating residential waste and recycling bins with lids—helping to reduce plastic leakage into local watersheds and, ultimately, the ocean. Witnessing how evidence-based advocacy could influence public policy was a defining moment that ignited my passion for driving sustainability at scale.

Following my MSc. in Environmental Management in UK, I carried this same sense of purpose into international work. At GreenTech Consultants, one of Sri Lanka’s leading project development firms, I served as Project Coordinator for the Biodiversity Baseline Survey of the Kala River Basin, a project of national importance. Our findings shed light on pressing sustainability challenges, including deforestation and the socioeconomic pressures facing rural communities. For my leadership and contributions, I received formal recognition from the Managing Director, affirming the lasting value of my work.

These experiences cemented my belief that sustainability is not only about data and frameworks, but also about mobilizing communities, shaping policy, and creating meaningful change for both people and ecosystems.

This note of appreciation was a pleasant surprise for my manager following a tenant waste and recycling training program I conducted for a client in Toronto.
