WHAT SHAPED MY COMMITMENT
In May 2013, as an intern at the International Holistic Tourism Education Centre, I presented research on plastic pollution to the Mississauga Environmental Advisory Committee. The response caught me off guard: the Mayor forwarded my work to the Prime Minister, the Premier of Ontario, and several key Ministers. It informed municipal waste discussions and helped drive a redesign of residential bins with lids — a small policy shift that kept plastic out of watersheds and, eventually, the ocean. That was the moment I understood how far evidence-based advocacy could travel.
I carried that conviction abroad. After completing my MSc in Environmental Management in the UK, I joined GreenTech Consultants in Sri Lanka as Project Coordinator for the Biodiversity Baseline Survey of the Kala River Basin — surfacing hard truths about deforestation and the rural communities caught in its wake. My Managing Director recognized the work formally.
Sustainability, I learned, is never just data. It's people, policy, and the will to move both.
